Australian Blackwood and Radiata Pine Control

Forestry Impact on Native Vegetation Post-Fire Regeneration.

Radiata Pines and Australian Blackwood have both been introduced to Kangaroo Island’s western end many years ago.

The pines are grown in forestry plantations however they do self-seed into the surrounding native vegetation. After fires the Blackwood seeds germinate prolifically and can takeover the higher value indigenous vegetation.

While woody weeds contractors were able to remove the smaller saplings, some of the older trees were in excess of 10 metres tall. AHTS removed the remainder of the trees that were too big for the weeds contractors, chipping the branches so the mulch could be used to retain moisture and put much needed nutrients and increase microbial activity in the soil.
